Helena Orava - MY 5 Best finnish design Helsinki |
1. Tapio Wirkkala designed a necklace for his wife Rut Bryk as a surprise present, complete with a sweet poem. The necklace is handmade with small leaves and golden pearls. I was touched when I first saw the necklace and read the poem. Truly a gift given with love.
»» Inquiries: the necklace is not in production.
2. Tale stool Ilmari Tapiovaara's three-legged stackable stool suits many spaces. Light and beautifully curved wooden seat, yet sturdy to sit on. I like organic shapes and 50's design - another example is Carlo Mollino's elegant wooden furniture.

MY 5 Favorite spots in Helsinki
The seashore at Kaivopuisto park.
Huvila Festival Tent The tent is a concert venue for the Helsinki Festival in August. Good selection of programs, and the timing is wonderful, taking place on the dusky August evenings. One of my best experiences was the concert by Gotan Project - incredible show.
Pihlajasaari island off the coast of Helsinki The outer rocks are terrific on a hot summer day. I like to take something to read and to eat, sometimes sparkling wine in good company. Late in the afternoon it's blissful to take a nap under a pashmina. The other nearby small islands are great, too.
The small restaurants of Helsinki I like breakfast, so my favorite places are Ekberg and Engel. In the evenings I like to socialize casually at Restaurant Tori. I must confess that I'm a gourmet and good places for that are restaurants Demo and Särkänlinna.
Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art The building by Steven Holl is amazing: light is reflected beautifully off the large windows, the hallways are long and curved, and the material selection is honest. The location at the very heart of downtown makes it easy for tourists to find the place. In the evening, the Mannerheim statue in front forms a great shadow on the wall.
