Markus Selin - MY 5 Finnish films |
1. Kauas Pilvet Karkaavat (Drifting Clouds) Aki Kaurismäki's greatest film. This is Finland from the other side.
2. Tuntematon Sotilas (Unknown Soldier) Väinö Linna's literary masterpiece put on film by Edvin Laine. This is guts and glory. This is Finland - don't mess with us.
3. Rosvo Roope (Roope the Robber) One of the greatest films from the golden age of Finnish cinema - an example of the Finnish studio system at its best.
4. Komisario Palmun Erehdys (Inspector Palmu's Error) Mika Waltari's great book series about Inspector Palmu in its first and best adaptation to the big screen. Legendary characters in a movie that is still adorable. How can I get the remake rights...
5. Häjyt (The Tough Ones) This is Finland - want it or not - it's still the dominant type of Finnish character. Easy to spot at late-night grill kiosks. Don't mess with them.
